Following the Signposts in Making Changes in Your Life

April 1, 2012 by Paul Edwards Leave a Comment

For some people, the question of what to do with their lives comes easily; for others, it’s more difficult. If the thought of defining what you want from life sounds difficult these six signposts will help you define your destination and discover the inner compass that will direct you there.

Signpost One: All I Want Is . . .

“All I want is . . .” almost always far less than what you really want. In fact, when you attain it, you will quickly move on to other more desirable things that you want. In no time, you’ll be disappointed with your choices.

Signpost Two: Dissatisfactions, Discontents, and Restlessness

Being aware of what you’re dissatisfied with is often the next step in discovering what you truly do want. Heeding feelings of dissatisfaction, discontent, and restlessness can serve to prod and guide you to what you want . . . and can have. Feelings of discontent can become invaluable sources of energy to propel you to make choices, and take the action needed to create the life you want.

Signpost Three: A Yearning for the Magic

Remember that feeling of everything being fresh and new, tingling with possibility? These personal landmark moments are when we feel most alive and vibrant. This is the magic we yearn for, the magic that drives all dreams. Capturing and remembering these moments is important. To chart your desired future, you need a strong sense of the magic you felt at these moments. That feeling of magic will guide the choices you make about what you want in the new life you’re about to create.

Signpost Four: Your Inner Compass

This feeling we call the magic of life is accompanied by amazing bursts of energy. It draws out abilities we didn’t realize we had, and transforms us so that we can do just about anything we set our mind to.  The less an activity or the prospect of an activity feels like these magic moments, the better served you will be to steer in another direction. This feeling of magic acts like a barometer, or better yet, an inner compass.

Signpost Five: Source Dreams

As naive or grandiose as they are, our dreams arise from a natural human craving to experience the magic life can offer. In many ways, human evolution is a great generational relay race of dreams. At birth, we’re each passed a baton of dreams that has been carried throughout the generations before us.  What were those dreams, the source dreams that came with you into this world? Until we face our past, we cannot avoid repeating it or being limited by it.
