Young People Taking Action to Boost Job Growth Vital to Community Sustainability

August 19, 2012 by Paul Edwards 2 Comments

OurTime.org, an organization of young men and women of Millennial generation, was featured on Saturday night’s  CBS Evening News . Citing the fact that one in two young people are either unemployed or underemployed, the organization advocates creating one million new public service positions by expanding programs such as AmeriCorps, CitiYear, Habitat for Humanity, Teach for America, and others to rebuild the nation now.

Given the reality that this is the generation that will be leading this nation within a matter of years and will be living with and paying the bills for what is done today, we need to listen and act upon their aspiration to work and contribute to the nation’s future.

Just as compelling a reason is the reduction of public service employees, particularly teachers, but also fire and police professionals, as cities and counties desperately cut costs and a growing number are taking bankruptcy. Who better to fill these gaps than the people who are the most motivated to serve at this time of their lives?

Our local communities will be well-served by having a new generation of leaders. From our experience in our own community, we know volunteers are in short supply and we desperately need new a new generation to take up the reins in communities organizations of all kinds or to create new institutions and ways of making our communities sustainable.

OurTime’s goal is to get one million signatures. To sign the signature, go the site.
